If you're looking to grow someone on your team into
a parts-selling role, look for the person who has street
smarts. Do you have someone who comes to you with
a solution to a problem before giving you the problem
and one who cares about people? These are qualities
necessary to drive the internal parts counter. What the
service team needs to keep techs busy and vehicles
moving is a problem-solving procurement manager.

TRAINING
I still believe the rear parts counter
is a great place to start a counterperson. But it is vital that you rely on
other parts staff to train them. Your
technicians should not be training this person. When I started on
the rear counter, I was paired with

a 45-year journeyman counterman. He was close to
retirement, impatient, and wanted little to do with an
18-year-old ready to make mistakes. As a result, the
techs were left with someone who had more questions
than answers. Sadly, we all suffered as I earned my education. 
Years later, I developed a training plan that paired the
trainee with a counterperson so the trainee could interact with the techs. The journeyman would look up/
procure the parts for the techs, pass the parts requisition to the trainee to perform the same exercise, and
then check their work. I know that sounds obvious, but
you would be surprised how many times I walk into a
store and see the techs training the counter people.
A dealer's most apparent and mismanaged profit center is internal parts and reconditioning. Wise parts
sourcing considers all factors involved in the speed to
sale. Your parts pro knows how parts-sourcing decisions contribute to holding cost management, inventory turn, per-vehicle profitability and ultimately more
cars sold sooner.
