2022: The Year of the Service Department
F
or most of the automotive industry, 2022 started
the way 2021 ended. Dealerships are still feeling
the ongoing pressure from coronavirus restrictions
and having to navigate in an environment with a
reduced staff. The new vehicle chip shortage and the
rise in used vehicle prices last year are still causing substantial
inventory challenges. Plus, the nationwide labor
shortage, specifically regarding technicians and advisors,
just adds even more pressure in an already tense
daily fixed ops environment.
While all these challenges are genuine,
the one thing I have learned in
22 years of working in this industry
is the resilience dealerships have to
get through almost anything. Here
are 4 initiatives that I believe dealerships
should focus on in 2022 that
will help them through the challenges
outlined above and set them up for
success for years to come.

Typically, dealerships' fixed ops departments are the
most profitable areas in the organization. Unfortunately,
when you look at a dealership's website, fixed
ops typically get the least amount of attention. Much
of the dealership's website is focused on showcasing
new and used inventory, trade-in tools, and now digital
retailing. If you haven't already started,
2022 is the year to change this
using a fully integrated approach.
Start by showcasing more of your
dealership's fixed ops services, especially
those services that drive
customer pay. This includes everyday
services like oil changes, batteries,
and windshield wipers. But
it also includes late ownership services
like brakes, alignments, and
