INDUSTRY UPDATE
Can you believe it? We are now more than halfway
through 2022. Although we have all made great progress
in recovering from the previous pandemic years,
many dealers still have plenty of stress dealing with
the changes the auto industry has provided. With labor
markets being extremely tight, finding technicians,
service advisors, and BDC personnel remains both difficult
and expensive. The top dealers are in a continual
recruitment mode as part of each day's duties.
I also see technology advancements with artificial intelligence
systems and laser measuring equipment that
can help you uncover hidden opportunities and protect
your dealership. It is important that you take advantage
of these systems to provide continual growth. We are
seeing hi tech mobile service vehicles bringing repairs
to the customers. With the growth of electric vehicle
platforms, I see this as a much-needed option.
When I talk with the exceptional fixed ops managers,
I hear discussions about removing the points of
defection used by their customers. Examples of this
range from simple oil changes and wheel alignments
to tire replacements. By researching the specific markets
where they do business and learning what their
competitors charge for these services, they can better
market these services to their customers with confidence.
Since this process needed to close these points
of defection can be time consuming, it may be best to
have the research conducted by outside pros and then
implement accordingly.
Dealers tell me that with the shortage of new car
inventory, their used car business is exceeding their
new car sales in many months. Those newer customers
who bought a used car are typically not as loyal
to a franchised dealer. We will need to work hard to
educate them on the value of your shop. I am sure you
can get this done.
