This occurs when an EV battery internally reacts causing a self-reinforcing cycle of increased heat production. This means the battery continues to get hotter by itself until the battery reaches its limits or experiences a catastrophic failure like a fire or explosion. This self-reinforcement means the battery will continue to burn for a long time. There is no hope for the vehicle if it catches fire. So at that point you need to protect nearby staff, your building, and equipment. The best way to suppress an EV fire is with a vehicle fire blanket. These blankets, big enough to enclose an entire vehicle, will not put out the fire. They give you time to suppress the spread of fire from causing nearby damage. Like a fire extinguisher, you hope to never use it. But since it has a 20+ year shelf life, it provides significant peace of mind. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2024 || FIXED OPS MAGAZINE 33
